Narrative: Rough Facial Expressions For Characters

Just a few ideas for what some of their facial expressions might be like throughout the animation. Need some more designs for each and refinement.

Narrative: Environment Design

My Rough Factory Design

With Will's Characters

Another One With Will's Character Designs

I made a rough idea for our environment but still needs a lot of refining such as having the paper shredder and 'rejections' lever / trap door etc..  but think we should stick with the straight-on fixed camera throughout. I think the conveyor belt design I have here will be 3D modelled, along with the characters and then maybe we will just have a painted 2D background to suggest the rest of the factory world and keep focus on what's happening in the foreground. I've added a couple of Will's character designs in here as these were my favourite ones and I wanted to see how they would fit in with the factory space. Although I can't quite decide which I prefer at the moment, it's all work in progress!

Character: Developed Game Idea

My Words:  Wildlife    |    Energy    |    Stability

My idea is to make an App game as I think it would suit my idea best and is also most current in the games industry. The characters are pigs, all with different abilities for the challenges they may come across. It will be an agility course type game with crazy kinds of pigs who will encounter obstacles and what is the best way to overcome them. They have to collect food along the way to keep their energy levels up. New pigs are revealed at each level and the player has to decide when is the best time to use them as special pigs are only usable for a limited time. Each next level has increasing difficulty.

Here's some drawings I've done for the pig characters.
Standard Pig: for general use in the game such as walking and jumping etc.
Flying Pigs: To fly over gaps in the path, areas of water or enemies (Demon Pigs). There is Jet Pack Pig and Pig Wings. If your pig is running out of energy he can use Jet Pack Pig, if your Pig has a lot of energy, Pig Wings can be used.
Demon Pig: Wants to attack other pigs and drain their energy levels.
Swim Pig: To cross areas of water in their path, turns orange in the water to blend in with the other fish and has a blue snorkel.
Skinny Pig: To fit through small tunnels.
InvisiPig: Uses transparency to hide from the Demon Pigs. (No Sketch Available)

Life Drawing 3

First time drawing a male model, I found it okay, but I'll admit I much preferred the female.
We started with three poses on one page, five minutes each, and I tried to get information down to show the shadows. Next was a continuous line drawing which wasn't so bad, I also included some of the objects in the background around him. (roughly 20 mins). Third was a sitting down pose (roughly 25 mins) using what we wanted so I started off in pencil then went over in charcoal. Last we drew Alan in five poses for just one minute each, I wasn't really that happy with the overall outcome of this one in comparison to the quick poses of Jane but there's always time to improve ! (:

Further Development for Lair and Prop

Life Drawing 2

In today's Life Drawing class we had the same model as last week to draw. We started off by drawing Jane in four different poses for five minutes each, I quite enjoyed doing this one as the time limit made me work quite quick but it was enough time to get some other information in the drawing such as light and shadows. When it was finished it showed how she was moving about the room quite well. In the next exercise we were not allowed to draw any lines straight away, we just had to focus on the light / dark areas and negative space around Jane. Once I had put all my dark areas down on the page I worked into the lines and structure of her body with pencil to make the composition stronger. The next task was to draw her 10 times for one minute each but still trying to capture the tonal shadows, I found this one more difficult as I felt I was quite rushed for time and some of them could of been a lot stronger with little bit of extra time. Finally we did a continuous line drawing for 15 minutes of a medium of our choice, I chose pen as my previous pieces were all done in charcoal. This one didn't turn out so well in my opinion, I didn't mind the technique with the 'sketchy' effect to show tone but my proportions were not right. The top half wasn't so bad but something went wrong in the bottom half and it just doesn't look right. Overally pleased with the outcomes :)

Hero Prop Ideas

A quick page of 'Hero Prop' thumbnails. By typing words relating to 'atomic', 'bionic' and 'nuclear' into a search engine I found some really interesting items that could be of use to me in creating a Hero Prop for my 'Atomic Master Criminal'. These are not drawn free hand, I quickly traced over the images to get the general idea and inspiration for my final outcome, I may end up using parts of these and combining a few to make one quite interesting finished piece.

Life Drawing 1

In today's life drawing class we had a female model called Jane, (who I have drawn before in my foundation year). I really enjoy the drawing classes, I find them very relaxing and gives me a break from fixing my eyes on the computer screens. The first drawing was a single pose observation which we spent about 20 minutes on, I thought this one was the least successful as I don't think I got the proportions very accurate and just wasn't pleased with the overall appearance of it.
The second time, Jane held six different poses for just a minute each, I really enjoyed this exercise and although I felt a bit rushed, it got me working really quickly and loosely and I was surprised by how well some of them turned out. I especially liked the bottom right one :)
The third piece we drew Jane in two 15 minute sitting poses. I also thought this one was good as we had a lot more time to add some detail and tonal elements and use a medium of our choice, I stuck with the charcoal at first but then worked over the top with some ink so it was a lot bolder.
The final exercise was to draw Jane in 15 poses that were held for 30 seconds each which I found a bit more difficult as the time went so quickly and I was running out of room on my sheet of paper! The idea was to work very loose again with just a few suggestive lines etc and to try and capture the movement of her body and how it changes in the different positions.

Initial Thumbnails

Here's my first set of thumbnails that relate to my character's lair, I tried to use a variety of angles / perspectives to see what works well. At the moment I quite like 6 and 7 but in my next set of thumbnails I'm going to focus more on using tone and colour. Opinions welcomed ! :)

Pre-Brief Research and Thumbnails

THE CANDY LAND HUNTSMAN

 With Jordan yesterday we practiced getting research and thumbnails done really quickly, not to be scared about having too much detail at this stage ad just trying new ways of working. So we were given three scenes to choose from and research which were;
The Secret Lair of the Candy land Huntsman
The Secret Lair of the Steam-punk Explorer
The Secret Lair of the Gaelic Golem
So first I did the Candy land Huntsman one. We were given roughly 10 mins each time to create a quick kind of influence map based on our characters and then 15 mins to create 'Secret Lair' thumbnails from the information we gathered. Here's my other two....

                                                   THE STEAM-PUNK EXPLORER

                                                              THE GAELIC GOLEM

I really enjoyed this class and actually learnt a lot about how you can produce some potentially really useful thumbnails in a really short amount of time and not have to worry too much. Even from a few quick lines you can start to tell if the composition is working so then you can work more detail into it later.
I will be using Jordan's tips when I find out my character / hero prop later on today.

Still Life

I really enjoyed the still life drawing class last week with Vicky, the installation we had to draw from was so colourful and interesting to draw. I started off with a quick pencil sketch and then used a light wash of brown watercolour for the wooden easel parts of the installation. I then used some of the very vibrant inks that were provided for the bright sheets of plastic / tissue paper that were attached which a gave a really bold and eye-catching effect. We were given cyan, magenta and yellow ink pigments so I mixed some of them to get colours such as orange and purple. Here is a photo-collage I made from the pictures I took and the drawing I made from the structure.

Development on Thumbnails

This time I thought it would be good to experiment with colour and relate them more to my book excerpts. So some of these are for 'The Red Room' others for 'The Magic Shop'.
